"On a recent family vacation to Maine, one morning for breakfast my aunt treated us to her homemade doughnuts. I'd tried making doughnuts once or twice, never successfully. But these were perfect, a beautiful cake-y doughnut, just sweet enough but not too sweet. I have a formidable sweet tooth, but even I have never been able to eat doughnuts for breakfast without feeling sick and light-headed. Store-bought doughnuts, that is. These were wonderful, and just right with a glass of cold milk. She generously consented to let me copy down her recipe, which came from her mother-in-law, who got it from her mother.
